Rogue One Reshoot Director Says Film Was In ‘Terrible, Terrible Trouble’
Oscar-nominated writer and director Tony Gilroy was brought in to reshoot portions of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, for which he received a co-writing credit. In his first interview about the film, Gilroy talked about the poor shape of the film when Lucasfilm brought him onto the project.
“That was my super power,” Gilroy said on The Moment with Brian Koppelman podcast. “I’ve never been interested in Star Wars, ever. So I had no reverence for it whatsoever. I was unafraid about that. And they were in such a swamp… they were in so much terrible, terrible, trouble that all you could do was improve their position.”
Gilroy did offer praise for Disney in choosing to reshoot the film, which was, reportedly, an immensely expensive process. “The gumption, the balls of Disney and Bob Iger and the people there to gamble on what they gambled on is astonishing,” Gilroy said. “It was just a mess and fear. And because it wasn’t really my movie for a while, I slept every night.”
Gilroy also talked about a “purity” that was missing from the movie when he came onboard. “If you look at Rogue, all the difficulty with Rogue, all the confusion of it… and all the mess, and in the end when you get in there, it’s actually very, very simple to solve,” Gilroy said. “Because you sort of go, ‘Oh this is a movie where, folks, just look—everyone is going to die.’ So it’s a movie about sacrifice… It’s all a question about why are all these people going to sacrifice [themselves] and you need to motivate them with a purity throughout the way, and every scene in the movie has to be about the movie.”
Early on in the interview, Gilroy implied that his contribution to Rogue One was more significant than previously thought. “You’ll understand this better than anything else and I know you have a lot of geeks [who listen],” he said. “I came in after the director’s cut. I have a screenplay credit, in the arbitration, that was easily won.”
An “easily won” credit, considering that the director’s cut of the film had already taken place, would seem to mean that Gilroy’s changes were quite significant.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. The movie is currently available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
