Rogue One Writer Would Tackle a Dash Rendar Project - If It Kills Dash Rendar
The writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story admits he'd happily tackle a Dash Rendar standalone, but only if he can kill off the smug smuggler before the credits roll.
When a fan asked Gary Whitta if he'd write a Dash Rendar movie, he gave the blunt response of, "Can I kill him? If so yes." Whitta co-crafted Rogue One's epic wartime story and introduced fans to the likes of Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor and K-2SO. He and John Knoll didn't hold back with the death toll on Rogue One, and it sounds like it would be the same for Rendar.
While Dash Rendar isn't the most talked-about character in the Star Wars universe, he stole a place in many people's hearts after his introduction in 1996's Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multimedia project. Although he's sometimes criticized for being an imitation of Han Solo to fill in while Han was frozen in carbonite, Rendar has made a name for himself over the years.
Rendar was originally removed from canon after Disney's buyout of Lucasfilm, but the Tales From Vandor book that tied into Solo brought him into the new era of the franchise. Elsewhere, there were rumors Rendar was due to appear in a potential Solo sequel. Interestingly, his ship known as the Outrider was added to the special edition of A New Hope and more recently featured in The Rise of Skywalker.
Rendar's legacy as a hotshot pilot means he could easily slot into a variety of dangerous missions and lose his life in some sort of heroic, Rogue One-esque sacrifice. Plenty of ships (and characters) were lost in the battle against the Final Order, so it's easy to imagine a Rendar story leading up to his death in Episode IX. With J.J. Abrams bringing the longrunning Skywalker Saga to an end with The Rise of Skywalker, Disney is heading back into the history of the galaxy far, far away for a number of movies and TV shows.
